Acupuncture is a system of healing which draws on over two thousand years of experience from China and the Far East. It involves inserting very fine needles into certain areas of the body to stimulate the nerves and muscles. These areas are called acupuncture points.
Acupuncture works to rebalance the body’s flow of energy, and the tradition is as much about the maintenance of health as the management of disease. By choosing specific points on the body the acupuncturist can encourage the body’s own healing response.
Patients often have a sense of well-being after treatment, in addition to an improvement in their symptoms. This is because the focus is on the overall health of the patient, rather than the isolated treatment of specific symptoms.
At the initial consultation your acupuncturist will take a detailed case history in order to make a complete diagnosis of your health, and will then choose acupuncture points appropriate for your individual treatment.
The number of treatments you receive will vary depending on the nature of your complaint, its duration and your constitution. Many patients notice an improvement after their initial treatment, while for others it will take two or three sessions. The effects are often accumulative and some people find a course of acupuncture treatment to be the most beneficial.
